Is hospice care only for people who have given up?
No. Hospice care is as much about how you want to live as it is about how you want to die. Instead of focusing on curing an illness or prolonging death, the goal becomes to relieve symptoms and give patients the best quality of life they can have for the remainder of their life.
Is hospice care only for people with cancer?
No. While hospice care was originally created primarily for cancer patients, today many hospice patients have other life-limiting diseases such as heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease, Alzheimer’s disease, dementias, and other conditions. Hospice care is not limited to cancer patients.
Is hospice care expensive, and is it covered by insurance?
Hospice care is often covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance plans. This coverage typically includes medical equipment, medications related to the terminal illness, and support services.
Is hospice a place, or can hospice care be provided at home?
Hospice is rarely an actual location that people go to. Hospice care is almost always provided where a person lives. We go wherever the patient is, whether it is a nursing home, an assisted living facility, a private residence, a homeless shelter, or any other environment the patient calls home.
When should someone start hospice care?
Hospice care can be provided for months, not just days. It is often most beneficial when started early, allowing patients and families to receive comprehensive support throughout the end-of-life journey.
Will hospice care take away control from the patient or family?
No. Hospice care is centered around the patient’s wishes and goals. Patients and families are involved in care decisions, ensuring that care plans align with their preferences and values. Patients and caregivers are in control of their care and can choose who provides it.
Can someone stop hospice services after being admitted?
Yes. People can leave, or revoke, hospice whenever they want. There is also the option to be readmitted to services if you choose to do so.
Does hospice care support family members too?
Yes. Hospice care also provides support for the family. Services can include counseling, respite care, and bereavement support, helping families cope with their loved one’s illness and their own emotional needs.
Do you have to wait for a doctor to bring up hospice care?
No. If a patient is receiving treatments they do not want anymore, the patient or a caregiver can initiate hospice by starting the conversation with their doctor or by contacting a local hospice provider directly to ask for an evaluation and determine qualification. Patients and their family or caregivers can initiate hospice care on their own.
Is hospice care only for seniors?
No. Although most people cared for by hospice providers in the U.S. are over the age of 65, hospice care is available for anyone with a life-limiting condition who meets eligibility.
