What is hospice care?

Hospice care is comfort-focused medical care for people with a serious illness who are no longer pursuing a cure. It brings pain and symptom management, nursing care, emotional and spiritual support, medications, equipment, and family education to wherever the patient calls home. Learn how Humanitas approaches hospice care.

What is the difference between hospice and palliative care?

Palliative care relieves symptoms at any stage of a serious illness and can be provided alongside curative treatment. Hospice is palliative care for the final months of life, when the focus shifts fully to comfort and quality of life. Both are physician-guided. Read more in our Hospice Resource Center.

Does Humanitas Hospice provide hospice care at home?

Yes. Most of our patients receive in-home hospice care. We also provide care in assisted living communities and skilled nursing facilities throughout Philadelphia, Bucks, Montgomery, Delaware, and Chester counties.

Is hospice care covered by Medicare in Pennsylvania?

Yes. The Medicare hospice benefit covers hospice care, including the care team, medications related to the terminal illness, medical equipment, and supplies, typically at no cost to the family. Medicaid, VA benefits, and most private insurance plans also cover hospice. See who pays for hospice.

When should we call hospice?

Sooner than most families think. More hospital or ER visits without real improvement, a doctor mentioning “months, not years,” eating less, sleeping more, or needing help with daily activities are all signs it may be time to talk. Learn the signs, take our 60-second questionnaire, or call (215) 302-9955.

Where around Philadelphia does Humanitas Hospice serve?

We serve families in Philadelphia, Bucks County, Montgomery County, Delaware County, and Chester County, from our office at 1051 County Line Rd, Huntingdon Valley, PA 19006.

How quickly can hospice care start?

We’re available 24/7, and care can typically begin within a day of referral. Families can call us directly, and physicians and facilities can use our online referral form.
