Who Pays for Hospice?

At Humanitas Hospice, our mission is to ensure that everyone in our community who needs hospice care receives it. Our services are covered by Medicare, Medicaid, managed care plans, private health insurance, VA insurance, and private pay options – or a combination of these.

Medicare Hospice Benefit

When you begin receiving hospice services, Medicare covers your care under its Part A (hospital insurance) benefit. This means Medicare will pay for your hospice care, including medications related to your hospice diagnosis. While your hospice care is covered by the Medicare hospice benefit, you can still be covered by your original Medicare plan for any services that are not related to your hospice care.

Hospice Care If You Are in A Medicare Advantage Plan

When you receive hospice care, all Medicare-covered services are provided under the Original Medicare Plan, even if you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan (like an HMO or PPO) or another Medicare Health Plan. However, your Medicare Advantage Plan will continue to cover any additional services that are not included under the Original Medicare Plan, such as dental or vision benefits.

If you choose to remain in your Medicare Advantage Plan while receiving hospice care, you will need to continue paying your plan’s monthly premium.

Medicaid Hospice Benefit

If you are uninsured and require hospice services for yourself, your child, or another family member, you may apply for Medicaid. Once enrolled, you can receive Humanitas Hospice services under a Medicaid plan. This enrollment will cover all hospice services listed above for you or your family member.
